SWEP EVENT — The Economy of Kindness: How Kindness Transforms Your Bottom Line
Join the Society of Women Environmental Professionals, Massachusetts Chapter (SWEP-MA) for this online event with Linda Cohen.
What is the impact of kindness? In this highly interactive program, Cohen shares how kindness in the workplace, improves employee morale, elevates workplace culture, and reduces burnout. The size of the kindness action doesn’t matter. There is often an unexpected ripple effect and giving and receiving are often experienced differently. According to research from the University of California Riverside, 40% of our happiness is determined by intentional actions, not by genes (50%) or circumstances (10%). Cohen will encourage participation that will help attendees share ways to cultivate a strong culture of kindness. She will also share timely examples. This program will give your participants a variety of new kindness ideas and resources to implement immediately.
Linda Cohen is The Kindness Catalyst, a speaker, consultant and author of a new book, The Economy of Kindness: How Kindness Transforms Your Bottom Line. For more information check her website lindacohenconsulting.com.
The presentation will be 5-6 PM, EST, with optional networking from 6-6:30 PM, EST.
Co-sponsored with the Connecticut Society for Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP-CT) and the Northeast Energy and Commerce Association (NECA).

New England Wholesale and Retail Markets – Crisis and Opportunity
Calendar year 2022 into early 2023 has been an unprecedented period for wholesale and retail markets in the five restructured New England states. Among other issues, consumers, market participants, utilities, regulators and legislators all have grappled with historically high wholesale and retail prices that have resulted in business challenges, consumer complaints and attention of regulators and legislators across the region, including:
- a Christmas Eve supply reserve shortage that triggered millions in generator non-performance fines;
- widespread challenge for utilities to secure cost-effective wholesale bids to meet default service obligations and resulting utility-self supply arrangements that raise potential costs and risks for consumers;
- business challenges for retail suppliers and municipal aggregators to secure cost-effective supply to meet service requirements or face default or even market exit risks; and
- regulatory investigations and potential legislative interventions on a wide variety of issues, including but not limited to changes on longstanding default service procurement processes.
Our distinguished panel will examine and discuss this period of challenges, as well as potential opportunities for stronger retail and wholesale markets going forward.

Electrifying Gas Heating: The need, opportunity and challenges
Climate plans in Northeast states with statutory greenhouse gas emissions are clear: achieving climate goals may be challenging with the widespread use of natural gas to heat buildings. While there is some discussion about the role of renewable natural gas or hydrogen for the building sector, many agree that electrification will be the primary pathway to converting buildings from gas. Still, policymakers, implementers, and other stakeholders face challenges with translating this policy need into effective, affordable, and equitable programs. Join our panel of experts as they discuss the policy rationale for switching off gas heat, some of the practical challenges associated with converting customers, and policy options for promoting heat pumps to gas customers. If you work in climate policy and planning, electric and gas markets, or energy efficiency, this discussion is not to be missed!

New England Power Market “Reno”: Light Refresh or Complete Makeover?
WHAT: NECA Annual Power Markets Conference
WHERE: Waltham Woods Conference Center, 860 Winter Street, Waltham, MA
WHEN: Monday, November 13 from 9 am to 4 pm
OVERVIEW:
A major energy transformation is well underway in New England. According to ISO-NE, wind power dominates new resource proposals (nearly 16,000 MW), solar power is growing rapidly (12,000 MW forecast within a decade), and more than 11,000 MW of battery storage is being proposed. This transformation will result in changes to the power markets. To effectuate these changes, the power markets must undergo a renovation through a staged process—planning, design, and implementation—similar to renovating a home. The focus in 2023 has been on planning, but design decisions are emerging. At the upcoming power markets conference on November 13, 2023, there will be discussions about design options for the energy market, ancillary services market, and capacity market. These discussions will cover the advantages and disadvantages of different options, their timelines, and associated costs. Additionally, there will be conversations about the necessary transmission infrastructure investments to support the energy transition. NECA invites participants to join the conference and contribute ideas for this renovation process.

The new year brings us one year closer to 2030. If you are wondering what our much-needed clean energy grid will look like, join us for the 2024 Renewable Energy Conference. With a couple of utility-scale offshore wind projects recently achieving first delivery of power to the transmission system, we will feature a panel that probes the challenges and solutions to ensuring we can build on this success. We will look at top down and bottom up strategies to facilitate clean energy deployment and adoption, and take a deeper dive into the future of interconnection and DER development. Can Massachusetts produce best practices for the region after the DPU’s directives to the local distribution companies? And what’s in store with utilities’ Electric Sector Modernization Plan filings at the DPU? Come to explore these topics and more, and network with colleagues in the industry.

Low Carbon Fuel Standard Primer – Virtual Event
An LCFS Program is a market-based and technology-neutral policy to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuels (e.g. diesel and gasoline) by incentivizing a range of low-carbon and renewable alternatives. It allows producers and importers to generate, acquire, transfer, bank, borrow, and trade credits. LCFS Programs also reduce overall dependency on petroleum and improve air quality, and complement state emissions reduction and clean transportation programs. NECA’s Fuels Committee will bring together a panel of experts in the LCFS field to walk us through how these programs work, the evolution of LCFS programs across the country, and an update on the development of such programs in the Northeast.

Cumulative Impact Analyses to Address Environmental Justice in Massachusetts – Virtual Event
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is finalizing new regulatory amendments to require a cumulative impact analysis (CIA) for facilities in or near Environmental Justice (EJ) communities that are applying for an air Comprehensive Plan Application (CPA). These requirements are in addition to current EJ regulations needed through the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) office. The CIA requirements included analyses of multiple air, environmental, health and socioeconomic indicators; air dispersion modeling for criteria air pollutants (including mobile sources); and air toxics analyses using either a risk screening spreadsheet or enhanced air modeling. Risk limits must be met, or emissions mitigated. This presentation will introduce the new regulations and discuss the implications for air permitting in Massachusetts.

Current Trends in Retail Marketing to C&I Customers: Opportunities & Challenges
Retail marketing to the C&I segment has a compelling business case for providing cost-effective electric supply and for having substantially fewer regulatory requirements compared to the mass market residential segment. Nevertheless, the C&I segment faces exciting opportunities and challenges to develop innovative and cost-effective supply products while, at the same time, with helping customers respond to regionwide high prices and quickly evolving climate change goals that lead to aggressive renewables requirements, fuels transitions caused by New England region-wide electrification initiatives, and societal efforts to move towards carbon neutrality. WHERE: Boston University, Center for Computing & Data Sciences, 665 Commonwealth Avenue
A major transformation is underway in our energy system, driven by state and federal policies seeking to spur renewable development, electrify the economy, and slash carbon emissions by mid-century. These policies, and the rapid changes they have catalyzed, are putting immense pressure on current power market design. Looking ahead, can markets be redesigned to achieve reliability and carbon reductions while remaining economical—and what are the tradeoffs and the ways to minimize the impact? Or, ultimately, is the impact of this transformation so large that the solution must be something other than market based? Please join us for a robust discussion on these questions.

Gridlock or Growth: The Northeast’s Energy Evolution
Join NECA & CPES at the 2025 New England Energy Conference & Exposition, where industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators will converge to explore the dynamic landscape of energy in the Northeast. This year’s theme, “Gridlock or Growth: The Northeast’s Energy Evolution,” will delve into the critical challenges and exciting opportunities facing the region’s energy sector.
Focus: Data Center Energy Challenges & Opportunities
As data centers become increasingly integral to our digital economy, their energy demands and sustainability practices are in the headlights. This conference will provide a comprehensive examination of the energy challenges facing data centers in the region, including interconnection queues, siting permits, power requirements, and grid reliability. Is ISO-NE able to accommodate large data centers? What challenges do they impose on the system? What regulatory hurdles need to be overcome to bring these behemoth loads online? How do data centers contribute or contradict the regions’ net zero goals? Be in the room to hear directly from regional public utility commission chairs, utilities, ISO-NE, and other leaders on how they are addressing this new form of large load and its impacts on the system.
Key Highlights:
Engage with thought leaders and experts in discussions on the future of energy in the Northeast. Connect with industry experts and peers and key stakeholders. Don’t miss this opportunity to be at the forefront of the Northeast’s energy evolution.
