New England Power Market “Reno”: Light Refresh or Complete Makeover?

WHAT: NECA Annual Power Markets Conference
WHERE: Waltham Woods Conference Center, 860 Winter Street, Waltham, MA
WHEN: Monday, November 13 from 9 am to 4 pm

OVERVIEW:
A major energy transformation is well underway in New England. According to ISO-NE, wind power dominates new resource proposals (nearly 16,000 MW), solar power is growing rapidly (12,000 MW forecast within a decade), and more than 11,000 MW of battery storage is being proposed. This transformation will result in changes to the power markets. To effectuate these changes, the power markets must undergo a renovation through a staged process—planning, design, and implementation—similar to renovating a home. The focus in 2023 has been on planning, but design decisions are emerging. At the upcoming power markets conference on November 13, 2023, there will be discussions about design options for the energy market, ancillary services market, and capacity market. These discussions will cover the advantages and disadvantages of different options, their timelines, and associated costs. Additionally, there will be conversations about the necessary transmission infrastructure investments to support the energy transition. NECA invites participants to join the conference and contribute ideas for this renovation process.
