Overview

As a Safety Professional with Rhode Island Energy, your primary responsibility is to lead, train, and mentor a team of Safety Professionals in the implementation of the RIE Safety Program, in support of both field and office employees. This includes evaluating safe work practices, interpreting, reviewing, and updating safety policy, procedures, and rules, supporting safety committees, facilitating incident investigation, conducting safety field observations, developing and implementing training for both Safety Pros and all our customers, and other operational needs as appropriate. Lead safety projects and initiatives. Works to improve overall employee safety and health. Assist construction teams with evaluating safety plans and list plans.

This position will be filled at the appropriate level based on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

 

Responsibilities

  • Consult with senior safety professionals, supervisors, field supervisors, and others to evaluate work practices and recommend safe methods for implementation based on knowledge of RIE’s safety policies and procedures and state and federal agencies.
  • Serve as the lead safety subject matter expert to ensure all workers fully understand safety rules, procedures, and regulations.
  • Participate and/or facilitate safety-related working groups to ensure all solutions to issues adhere to Electric, and Gas Utilities safety rules, procedures, and policies.
  • Liaison between the safety department and safety committees to effectively bridge communications between employees and provide updated, recent safety events during meetings.
  • Oversight of the effectiveness of communicating recent safety messages to the field and communicating safety concerns back to Operations and management.
  • Asist in assigning Safety Pros to Facilitate and support incident investigations.
  • Key point of contact to the business lines for the Corporate Safety Management System to ensure all incidents are entered in a timely fashion and with accuracy.
  • Conduct Field Observations and provide feedback to crews and business lines.
  • Lead safety-related projects and initiatives.
  • Identify injury trends and create plans to address negative trends.
  • Oversight of all positions in which driving is an essential function of the job.
  • Will be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.
  • The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. The assigned work location may change. In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.
  • Other safety-related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

This position will be filled at the appropriate level based on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

Safety Professional
Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 3 years of relevant safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year-for-year basis, is required.

Senior Safety Professional
Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year-for-year basis, is required.
Preferred: Professional board certification, such as Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent.

Lead Safety Professional
Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 7 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year-for-year basis, is required.
Experience includes a minimum of 3 years in the gas/electric utility industry.

Professional board certification, such as Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent.
